Feline Magick

I believe you’d be hard-pressed to find a Pagan who doesn’t view a feline as a magickal animal. Felines, particularly housecats, have a lengthy relationship with magick, worship, and the occult. Most of us are at least somewhat familiar with the history of the cat, and cats have been tied to witches for centuries. Rather than going through all that, I’d like to take this post in a different direction. I’m going to tell you about some magickal felines living in my neighborhood.

It’s been exactly one year to the day since I’ve moved into the house I’m currently living in. It’s a typical house in a typical neighborhood. But this neighborhood just so happens to have magickal cats.

I met the first one right away. He was a very grizzled, black cat that the neighbor fed. The neighbor fed the cat for years, but had never been able to touch him. He called the cat Thing-A-Majig.

So how do I know Thing-A-Majig has magick beyond that of the average cat? Because I could feel it, and I could see it in Thing’s aura. He was an ancient, wizened cat spirit. He’d been prowling and working this neighborhood for years, maybe even decades…I figure since he’s a magick cat he’s got a rather atypical life span.

In addition to Thing, there was another magick cat. This one was pure white, large and stunning. It had sparkling fur, huge green eyes, and moved with an incredible power. This cat boldly came into the backyard in spite of the presence of my cats. But they never fought. I wouldn’t call them friends, but my cats tolerated the White Cat, while they are quick to chase all other cat intruders away. The moment I encountered the White Cat I knew it was special and not entirely of this world.

For almost a year I saw Thing and the White Cat on a practically daily basis. The White Cat seemed to magically appear in our yard quite often, and Thing could always be found sleeping near the driveway or in the crux of a live oak in the yard. Then all of a sudden they both disappeared. And then something awful happened.

My beloved tuxedo cat, Pearl, whom I’d had since I was nineteen, disappeared. She reappeared in the wee hours of the morning very sick. I monitored her throughout the day and then saw her pee straight water with no smell. I rushed her to the vet on a Saturday night and was told that she was in complete kidney failure. There are no words for moments like that. My baby, a cat I’d lived my entire adult life with (seventeen years), a cat that was tied to every fiber of my being, was dying. We would have one last night together.Image

I took her home and held her and cried all night long. The next morning I had her put down.

I have not seen Thing or the White Cat since.

Is there a connection between Pearl and the magick felines? Pearl definitely had some magick, and I was pretty sure she was 60% cat and 40% imp. And I have to acknowledge that it was strange how I saw Thing and the White Cat almost daily, until just before Pearl’s death. Maybe they were spirit guides coming to escort Pearl to cat heaven. Maybe Pearl was part astral and needed to be visited by cats from her realm in order to cross back into that realm. But really I don’t know. I just know that Thing and the White Cat were magick, and their disappearance seemed to have some correlation to Pearl’s leaving this world.

A few days ago I saw one black and one white cat hanging out down the street. These cats are not Thing and the White Cat, but it is a bit odd that there are two new cats, one perfectly black, and one perfectly white, that have been sighted in the neighborhood. These particular cats have not come into the backyard or really even near our house for that matter. But then today a little magick happened. I went out to lunch with friends, and then came home with the intention of posting my blog. I had already written it in rough draft form, so I was going to tweak and publish. As I pulled into my driveway, there was the new White Cat at my front door. Wow… I’m really not quite sure what to make of that…

I’m a serious cat person (sometimes I claim to be part feline) and I have had hundreds of cat encounters, and shared my life with many cats. Never before have I been so sure that I have encountered magickal felines. Yes, I believe that all cats are magick and have magickal qualities, but Thing and the White Cat possess a deeper magick, and I don’t think they exist entirely in the physical plane. And of all the beloved cats in my life, Pearl was burrowed deep in my soul, and she had powers beyond that of the average cat.

I am so grateful that I have somewhere to share this story, as I’ve really needed to tell it. When we were at the letter “C” I had just lost Pearl and I couldn’t write it all down yet. I am thankful to have a community of like-minded individuals who can accept and process this tale for what it is…and really I’m not sure just what it is… Any thoughts are more than welcome and appreciated.

And tonight, leave a bowl of cream for your strays, hug your housecats tight, and soak in a little of their feline magick.

I’m sorry you lost Pearl. Losing companions is never easy, especially when there’s that special bond.

Thank you so much. As someone who is also a serious cat person, cats are the main part of my life. To me they are more important than any human ever has been. I had 15 until the day before yesterday when my beloved Vincent died. But I’ve had literally hundreds over the years and each one has such a different magical quality. I’m crying now to think how much I love them. Each cat that comes into our lives has a very special gift. I prefer them to humans, particularly men!!

So true! Mine have always been the light of my life. I love meeting other cat people. And before I met my husband it was an instant deal breaker if any man told me he was allergic to cats 🙂

What a wonderful but bittersweet story. I know *exactly* what you mean when you describe ‘spirit animals’ – sometimes you just Know.

My partner is definitely part cat, I am a dog, horse and rabbit person, I love cats and they seem to like me, but they love Fran! She speaks cat fluently (a language I’ve been trying to learn for years) and watching them interact with her is magical.

I’m sorry you lost your cat though, I lost my dog (I’m the last person to call animals familiars but this one was) about the same time and it still hurts like hell. I’m glad you were able to hold her that night and say good bye and know she was leaving even if it was such a hard thing to do. Believe me if you don’t get that opportunity it can haunt you.

Thank you for your beautiful comments.
I have also worked on learning cat language for years, but I’m just terrible with languages!
I love knowing there are so many amazing animal people out there.

~hugs~ I’m a cat person. But there will be no more cats for me since my step-daughter to be is allergic. Sadness, but I take the time I can to enjoy other cats when I can.
